John Carter is a dynamic leader with 40 years of experience in the financial services, retirement and insurances industries. John’s career reflects a demonstrated track record overseeing P&Ls, leading large-scale transformational initiatives and setting strategies that drive inclusive, high-performing organizations for profitable growth. He is an influential thought leader and advocate on financial services topics and regulatory issues. John serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Nationwide Financial, with P&L responsibility for the portfolio of annuity, life insurance, retirement and asset management businesses. The Nationwide Financial businesses hold top 10 market positions in every major category in which they compete, manage more than $350 billion in customer assets, and are recognized by independent experts for exceptional customer experience. Under John’s leadership, Nationwide Financial has invested significantly in technology modernization, distribution expansion and innovative solutions—growing sales 30% since 2019. Since joining Nationwide, John has held several key leadership positions, including President of Nationwide Financial Services Distributors Inc., where he led wholesale distribution channel sales; and President of Nationwide Retirement Plans, where he was accountable for top- and bottom-line performance. Prior to Nationwide, he held leadership positions at Prudential Financial, UBS and Kidder Peabody. John brings deep industry governance experience through his involvement with corporate, non-profit and industry boards. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and finance from the University of Missouri.
