In January of this year, Maia and her brother and figure skating partner, Alex Shibutani, were inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in their first year on the ballot. The trailblazing duo have additionally co-authored three books in the past three years. The most recent, a non-fiction children’s picture book, Amazing: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Inspire Us All, was released in April. Maia is currently on the Advisory Council for Asia Society’s AWE initiative, and was selected as the inaugural Winter Olympic Athlete Representative of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation NextGen Program. She has served as a Sports Envoy with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since 2016. In 2018, Maia and Alex made Olympic history by becoming the first ice dancers of Asian descent and the first team of color to medal at the Olympic Winter Games. Throughout their 14-season career, the “ShibSibs” have showcased a consistency of quality and mastery, earning them unprecedented results including 3 World Championships medals and U.S. Championships medals every year. Maia is expanding her reach into the worlds of entertainment, technology, and advocacy as a producer and consultant.
