Susan Schaeffer founded The Patients’ Academy for Research Advocacy in 2018 to help build a community of patients and carers who are better able to influence medical research to be patient-centered, relevant and useful through education about the processes and stakeholders involved in researching and developing new treatments. The initiative builds on Susan’s 15-year career analyzing the biopharmaceutical sector, most recently as the chief editor of the biopharmaceutical industry journal BioCentury during 2012-2018. She was previously senior editor in charge of Product Discovery & Development coverage, and managing editor of BioCentury and BioCentury Extra. As head editor, Susan advanced new thinking in clinical development, regulation, pricing and market access. She made patient-centered R&D a key editorial theme, and took the position that patients can and should show the way when it comes time to translate great science into medicines that they really want and society will pay for. Her work has been cited in regulatory filings and has influenced global biopharmaceutical companies to begin working on pricing experiments that can improve access to healthcare innovation.
