Expanding access to capital helps level the playfield for everyone

Milken Institute HBCU Fellows Program

The Milken Institute has long believed that expanding access to capital helps level the playfield for everyone. One of the most effective ways to change the communities who receive the most resources is to change the industries that distribute those resources. In an initial partnership with Carlyle, MI launched a DEI in Asset Management Program, focused on establishing best practices for creating a more inclusive financial sector. We soon realized that changing the industry would require fostering a pipeline of diverse talent to one day work in financial services. In 2023, with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, MI piloted the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Fellows Program. Now in its second year, the program will expand the number of students served and begin to establish an alumni network to mentor the next generation of the financial industry.

  • Ten HBCU partner schools and 16 students selected
  • Eight-week curriculum focused on the fundamentals of Wall Street with bespoke professional development opportunities with industry leaders
  • The 16 students interned at Alliance Bernstein, JP Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Tradeweb, and other top-tier companies and financial services firms this summer
  • 100 percent expressed interest in mentoring future Milken Institute HBCU Fellows based on their experience in the program

Let's talk about how we can bring your program's mission to life.

A strong Sovereign Wealth Fund is an investment in a country's future

Financial Innovations Labs® and Philippines Sovereign Wealth Fund

The Milken Institute Financial Innovations Lab® has a strong track record helping foreign countries strategize on the creation of a Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF). An SWF is an investment in a country’s future, designed to invest capital and assets in a diversified portfolio. As the Philippines is one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies, a well-structured fund with strong governance would attract foreign investment, increase the return on investment in national savings and promote growth and social development. Previous governments considered creating a fund to support long-term investments, but designs were never finalized. The current government revived discussions and engaged with the Milken Institute Financial Innovations Lab® team to explore options for the structure of the fund.

  • The Institute brought together government officials, prominent sovereign fund experts, and others to help source ideas on structure, governance and investment frameworks
  • Our report laid out recommendations and paths forward that legislators used to support discussions in the upper house of Congress
  • A Philippines SWF of (US)$8.9 billion was approved on May 31, 2023

Through our exclusive events, convenings and roundtables, the Milken Institute endeavors to connect with the right people, in the right place at the right time. We work with our partners to find the settings and peers that will elicit impactful outcomes.
