Banking and finance have, from the earliest days, been enabled by technology. In recent years the pace of change has accelerated rapidly, with many new technologies becoming available with the promise of greater efficiency, customer engagement and deep insight. On top of digital and mobile services, bots can improve customer experience and loyalty. Wearables, biometric analysis and machine learning can improve security and reduce cyber threats. Cloud services, AI and data analytics can boost returns and cut costs. The potential is huge. Innovation can come from any quarter and, with so much technology to adopt, the cost of failure can be significant. This CEO round table will explore the opportunities and the challenges of new technology for banking and finance, and explore questions such as:

  • 78% of banks are increasing investment in innovation, but which investments are delivering the best, least risky returns?
  • How can banks team with fintech firms to keep up with the pace of change?

Our planet is on the brink of ecological and environmental crises that we have the ability to avert. We have already entered what has been classified as the Sixth Extinction. Habitat loss, climate change, and natural resource exploitation are causing species to vanish at a rate 1,000 times faster than they would if humans were not present. Yet, there is cause for hope: Sustainable business practices are becoming standard, thanks to initiatives such as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, and technological advancements are providing new sources of support to frontline conservationists around the world. What are the most innovative efforts emerging from MENA that can help us fuel a virtuous cycle instead of a vicious one? How do we ensure that we take full advantage of the profound opportunities at our fingertips?

In many economies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute to about a third of GDP and about 80 percent of employment. And even in countries with considerable natural resource wealth, most entrepreneurship and business opportunities flow from sectors where SMEs are most prevalent (such as agribusiness, services, and manufacturing). For decades, limited access to finance has hindered growth of SMEs globally. But with an expanding middle class and increasingly active capital markets across many regions, new opportunities are opening for financing job growth and entrepreneurship. IFC-Milken Institute Alumni from Kenya, Uganda, and Pakistan will investigate what types of capital market reforms and innovative funding structures the Middle East and Africa could leverage to better meet the needs of small companies while fostering economic diversification.

Part 1: Building Tomorrow's Global Workforce

The Arab Spring and its aftermath demonstrated the far-reaching geopolitical and economic importance of providing MENA youth with workforce-relevant skills and entrepreneurship opportunities. Today, the youth unemployment rate in the region stands at 31 percent, and university graduates make up nearly a third of the total unemployed population. In a landscape of over 300 million people with one of the world's youngest populations, how can international actors—from governments to corporations and foundations—provide more relevant training while helping generate business and employment opportunities? What are policymakers doing to address this challenge within MENA, and how can international education exchanges and other cross-border and cross-sector initiatives help?

  • Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO, Coursera
  • Solveig Nicklos, Dean, Abu Dhabi School of Government

In addition to the severe emotional cost to individuals and communities, an October 2018 report by the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health warns that, left unchecked, the proliferation of anxiety, depression, violence, and trauma will cost the global economy $16 trillion by 2030. Like physical health, mental health requires awareness, vigilance, care, and management. However, many models used for assessing mental health issues are based on a Western point of view that may overlook important features of MENA cultures and experiences. Leading experts will discuss local and worldwide causes of mental health disorders, as well as the most effective treatments currently available.

MENA's startup ecosystem has become much more structured in recent years. The region now has over 3,000 startups, with the UAE leading the pack as home to 42 percent of them, followed by Egypt with 12 percent. The activity culminated last year in several high-value deals, including the acquisition of Souq.com by Amazon, the purchase of the majority stake of Namshi.com by Emaar Malls, and the half billion dollars raised by Careem from the likes of Rakuten, Inc., STC Ventures, Kingdom Holding Company, and Daimler. While the signs of progress are indisputable, the Arab startup sector still draws far less investor interest than the global leaders. What are the areas of growth for local entrepreneurs and innovators?

A 2008 global United Nations survey concluded that "The interface between creativity, culture, economics and technology...has the potential to generate income, jobs and exports while at the same time promoting social inclusion, cultural diversity and human development." Art has proven to be a powerful force in the economy, especially as new industries join and develop creative fields, bringing digitalization, audience interactivity, and other technological and business advancements. Meanwhile, culture has also become recognized as a country's 'soft power,' with the ability to impress a beneficial image or message on the world. For instance: "Give peace a chance." Captains of the creative economy will share inside perspectives on the ways creative economies are taking advantage of these areas of influence and where there is room for development.

As investors, companies, and corporates maintain a strong interest in the tech industry, growing tech businesses turn to venture capital as their go-to funding source. VC firms are bullish on tech, and the favorable fundraising environment is resulting in new expansion and opportunity funds. This session will open with a conversation between His Royal Highness, Prince Turki AlFaisal AlSaud, moderated by Michael Milken, followed by a roundtable discussion, facilitated by Cornelia Meyer.

The last two decades saw major conflicts in the greater MENA area, including the Arab Spring and the rise and fall of ISIS. Libya ended up a failed state, and Iraq and Syria were obliterated. In the end, the Assad regime survived. As the U.S. seems to be retreating from the territory and Europe is occupied with its refugees, other powers are gaining a strong foothold. Meanwhile, some Middle East nations needs to be rebuilt on a massive scale. The GCC has an important role to play, particularly the KSA and the UAE. The international community also has a responsibility to lend support. Who should take the lead in moving forward and is this the right time to start discussing reconstruction?

  • Moderator Michael Milken, Chairman, Milken Institute
  • His Royal Highness, Prince Turki AlFaisal AlSaud, Chairman of the Board, King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies
  • Moderator Cornelia Meyer, Chairman and CEO, MRL Corporation; Chairman and Chief Economist, LBV Asset Management
