Managing General Partner and President, San Francisco Giants Baseball Club
Peter Magowan is President and Managing General Partner of the San Francisco Giants, entering his tenth year in this role. Magowan initiated the plan that built the privately financed Major League ballpark, China Basin. Magowan serves on several Major League baseball committees — labor relations, strategic planning, equal opportunity, audit and the National League′s Executive Committee — and contributed to the new collective bargaining agreement with Major League players. He is the recipient of many community awards including The San Francisco Business Times 1993 Bay Area Business Executive of the Year and a Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and Commitment to HIV/AIDS Awareness in recognition of the Giants becoming the first professional sports team to stage a benefit game for AIDS. The City of Hope′s "Spirit of Life" award was presented to Magowan in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Bay Area community, and for his long-standing support of philanthropic efforts, in May 2000. Magowan spent 30 years with Safeway Inc. and was its chairman and CEO. He remains a director. Magowan is also a director on the boards of DaimlerChrysler A.G. and Caterpillar, Inc. Magowan earned his master′s in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University. He also completed two years of additional postgraduate work at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
