In the new economy, it's brainpower, and those cities with a critical mass of skilled workers, established employers and entrepreneurs in knowledge-based industries are the top hot spots for doing business and advancing a career. The proximity of research institutions and universities, with their profusion of Ph.D.'s helps a lot, too.
