Yvonne Chan
Member, California State Board of Education; Principal, Vaughn Next Century Learning Center
Yvonne Chan, a member of the California Board of Education, is principal of the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center, serving 2,500 Los Angeles students in pre-school through 12th grade. She has pushed the limits of education and social reform in a low-income neighborhood with strategies such as smaller classes, universal preschool, accelerated English learning, special-education full inclusion, longer school days and academic year, a family center/business co-op, adult education, a university professional development center, teacher peer review and a performance pay system. High school students study world issues, learn Mandarin and complete 60 community college credits. Vaughn leverages millions of dollars for programs related to youth development, and family and community strengthening to create a "learning village." The recipient of numerous honors, Chan holds a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles; an M.A. from California State University, Northridge; and a Ph.D. from UCLA, where she is an adjunct professor.
