Brent Lane

Brent Lane directs the Center for Competitive Economies at the University of North Carolina, where he holds an adjunct appointment at the Kenan-Flagler Business School. Beyond the center, his professional life bridges venture capital, research commercialization and entrepreneurial development. He is an authority on the role of dynamic "gazelle" firms in economic vitality and pioneers novel intelligence techniques to identify and describe emerging generations of high-impact companies. He also applies economic strategy to designing development schemes that preserve sensitive natural and cultural heritage sites while enhancing their value to regional economies. He serves on the boards of cultural heritage foundations and is a frequent advisor to global international development and conservation organizations, including the World Bank, UNESCO and the World Archaeological Congress. He holds graduate degrees in science policy and business administration and undergraduate degrees in both physical and social sciences.
