Susan Desmond-Hellmann
Chancellor and Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor, UCSF
Susan Desmond-Hellmann is chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, where she is also the Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor. An oncologist, Desmond-Hellmann spent 14 years at Genentech, most recently as president of product development. During her tenure, several Genentech therapeutics were approved, and it became the nation's top producer of anti-cancer drug treatments. A member of the Biotech Hall of Fame, Desmond-Hellmann was named one of the world's most "Powerful Innovators" by Forbes, and repeatedly named one of Fortune's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business." In 2010, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and elected to the Institute of Medicine. She sits on the Procter & Gamble board, the California Academy of Sciences board, the National Cancer Advisory Board and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco's Economic Advisory Council. She has a bachelor's degree and an M.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno, and an M.P.H. from UC Berkeley.
