Glen Thomas
Secretary of Education, State of California
Glen Thomas is the Secretary of Education for California, a position he accepted in January 2009. He began his career as a teacher in migrant education and went on to be an administrator at the district, county and state levels. He worked for California's Department of Education, its Curriculum Commission, the Commission for Academic Content and Performance Standards, and the U.S. Department of Education. He also spent eight years as executive director of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association. Thomas has been a leader in developing academic standards, useful assessments and strong accountability mechanisms. He has taught at the community college level; California State University, Sacramento; Pepperdine University; and the University of Southern California. He earned his Ph.D. in educational leadership from USC, a master's degree from Washington State University and a bachelor's degree from Biola University.
