Ran Boytner is the Director of International Research at the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Southern California. Prior to these positions, Boytner worked at the Getty Conservation Institute and was curator and guest curator at the Skirball and Bower museums. In addition to extensive field experience, Boytner is an expert in ancient textile dyes and dyeing technologies, and is engaged in anthropological interpretations of his lab results. He is also interested in the politics of archaeology, particularly in ways by which the archaeological past is appropriated for contemporary political purposes. Boytner is part of the founding families of Ocean Charter School, a K-8 Waldorf-inspired charter school in Los Angeles. Boytner received a Ph.D. in archaeology from UCLA.
