Matthew Bogdanos
Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps; Assistant District Attorney, New York County
Matthew Bogdanos is a homicide prosecutor in the New York County District Attorney's Office, where he has been an Assistant District Attorney since 1988. A colonel in the U.S. Marines, he has served in South Korea, Lithuania, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kosovo. Recalled to active duty after losing his apartment near the World Trade Center on 9-11, he deployed to Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, receiving a Bronze Star for actions against al-Qaeda. He then served several tours in Iraq, receiving a 2005 National Humanities Medal for his work in recovering thousands of Iraq's priceless treasures. Exposing the link between antiquities trafficking and terrorist financing, he has presented his findings in 15 countries, in venues that include Interpol and both houses of Britain's Parliament. All royalties from his book, Thieves of Baghdad, go to the Iraq Museum. A former middleweight boxer, he was raised waiting tables in his family's Greek restaurant in Lower Manhattan. He holds advanced degrees in law and classics from Columbia University, and in strategic studies from the Army War College.
