George Ayittey
Distinguished Economist in Residence, American University; President, Free Africa Foundation
George Ayittey is Distinguished Economist in Residence at the American University and President of the Free Africa Foundation. Previously Ayittey was a national fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University in 1988. An accomplished author, he has published five books on Africa, including Africa Betrayed (1992), Africa in Chaos (1998) and Africa Unchained (2005). Africa Betrayed won the 1993 H.L. Mencken Award for Best Book of 1992. Ayittey's articles on Africa and the developing world have appeared in numerous publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, The Times of London, USA Today and The CATO Journal. He has also appeared on CNN International, CBS's "Nightwatch," ABC's "Nightline," "The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour" and BBC World Service and has testified several times before U.S. Congressional committees. Ayittey received a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
