Steven Burd is Chairman, President and CEO of Safeway Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America. Since joining the company in 1992, Burd has spearheaded its expansion into the prescription drug business, food service, fuel centers, online home delivery and cafes. Safeway has been recognized as one of the best-managed retail food companies and has been ranked by Fortune as one of the most admired companies in the food-and-drug sector. In 2007, Burd created the Coalition to Advance Healthcare Reform, an alliance of more than 50 companies advocating state and federal health-care reform that will advance market-based solutions ensuring universal access and prioritizing preventive care while delivering more transparency in delivery systems and administrative costs efficiencies. Prior to joining Safeway, Burd was a general management consultant to companies in a variety of industries. He received a master's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin.
