Nader Twal
Smaller Learning Community Coordinator, Western Association of Schools and Colleges Facilitator, Millikan High School
Nader Twal is the Smaller Learning Community Coordinator and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Facilitator at Millikan High School in Long Beach, Calif. The school has more than 4,000 students. Going beyond standard grammar and reading comprehension lessons, English teacher Twal teaches students about character, asking them to serve as peer editors, coaches and evaluators. Twal's senior-level students even act as teachers in "The Bible as Literature," an elective class he revived from near-cancellation. In this class, students develop PowerPoint presentations to teach the curriculum and hold trials of Old Testament prophets and kings. Twal also helped develop a literacy workshop and played a key role in creating the PEACE Academy (Personal success through Empowerment, Academic achievement, Conflict resolution and Ethics in action), a small learning community for international studies that prepares college-bound students for competition in a culturally diverse global economy. Twal was named a Milken Educator in 2003.
