Andrew von Eschenbach
Commissioner, U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Andrew von Eschenbach is Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A urologic surgeon, he directed the Genitourinary Cancer Center and was founding director of the Prostate Cancer Research Program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, which he joined in 1976. He was special assistant for external affairs to MD Anderson's president, held the Roy M. and Phyllis Gough Huffington Clinical Research Distinguished Chair in Urologic Oncology and served as chairman of the Urology Department and as a consulting professor in the Cancer Biology Department. In addition, he served as vice president for academic affairs and executive vice president and chief academic officer. Von Eschenbach was a founding member of the National Dialogue on Cancer and president-elect of the American Cancer Society. He has written numerous articles, books and chapters contributing to the scientific literature. Von Eschenbach received his M.D. from Georgetown University Medical School.
