George Poste
Director, The Biodesign Institute, Arizona State University
George Poste is Director of The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, a new initiative combining research in biotechnology, nanotechnology, advanced computing and neuromorphic engineering. He also serves as chief executive of Health Technology Networks, a consulting company specializing in the application of genomic technologies and computing in health care. He is chairman of Orchid Cellmark, which performs DNA forensic analysis. From 1992 to 1999, he was chief science and technology officer, and president of research and development at SmithKline Beecham, where he was associated with the successful registration of 31 drug, vaccine and diagnostic products. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the U.K. Academy of Medicine, a Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution and a member of the Council for Foreign Relations. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth for services to the development of biosciences. He has published more than 300 scientific papers and co-edited 15 books, primarily in the fields of cancer research and drug delivery. Poste earned one Ph.D. in veterinary medicine and a second Ph.D. in virology at the University of Bristol.
