Steven Burd is Chairman, President and CEO of Safeway Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, with stores in the United States and western Canada. Since joining the company in 1992, Burd has spearheaded the expansion into the prescription drug business and other areas, including food service, fuel centers, online home delivery and Starbucks coffee cafés. Safeway has been recognized as one of the best-managed retail food companies and has been ranked by Fortune as one of the most admired companies in the food and drug sector. Prior to joining Safeway, Burd was a general management consultant to companies in a multitude of industries. He is a director of Kohl′s Corporation, a member of the Carroll College board of trustees and serves on the board of the Food Marketing Institute. Burd earned a master's degree in economics at the University of Wisconsin.
