Caldwell Esselstyn Jr.

Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. is a Preventive Cardiology Consultant in the Department of General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968 and has served as president of the staff and member of the board of governors. He also served as president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and organized the first National Conference on the Elimination of Coronary Artery Disease. His scientific publications number more than 150, including his 1995 research on arresting and reversing coronary artery disease in severely ill patients, which is one of the longest longitudinal studies of its type. In April 2005, Esselstyn became the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine. Prior to entering the field of medical research, he was an Army surgeon in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. In addition, he achieved a gold medal as a member of the U.S. rowing team in the 1956 Olympics. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University and an M.D. from Western Reserve University.
