Steven Burd is Chairman, President and CEO of Safeway, Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America with 1,802 stores in the United States and western Canada. Safeway, regarded as one of the best managed food retail companies, was ranked by Fortune magazine as one of the "most admired" companies in its sector in 2004. Burd spearheaded a significant turnaround when he joined the company in 1992, and as a leader in responding to the changing environment and consumer preferences, he is now heading the process of fundamentally reinventing its business. He has also expanded its reach into the prescription drug business and other services including foodservice, fuel centers, online home delivery and Starbucks coffee cafés. Prior to joining Safeway, Burd was a general management consultant to companies in a multitude of industries. Burd is a director of Kohl′s Corporation, a member of the California Business Roundtable, the Carroll College Board of Trustees and serves on the board of the Food Marketing Institute. Burd earned his master′s in economics at the University of Wisconsin.
