James  Barth
James Barth
Senior Fellow, Milken Institute; Lowder Eminent Scholar in Finance, Auburn University

James Barth is a Senior Fellow at the Milken Institute and the Lowder Eminent Scholar in Finance at Auburn University. His research focuses on financial institutions and capital markets, both domestic and global, with special emphasis on regulatory issues. Barth was the chief economist of the Office of Thrift Supervision and previously served as the chief economist of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. He was also professor of economics at George Washington University, associate director of the economics program at the National Science Foundation, and Shaw Foundation Professor of Banking and Finance at Nanyang Technological University. He has been a visiting scholar at the U.S. Congressional Budget Office, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, and the World Bank. He is a member of the Advisory Council of Georgetown University's Credit Research Center and is associated with Cornerstone Research. Barth has authored more than 100 articles in professional journals and written and edited several books, including The Great Savings and Loan Debacle and The Reform of Federal Deposit Insurance: Disciplining the Government and Protecting Taxpayers. Barth serves on several professional journal editorial boards and is series editor of the Milken Institute Series on Financial Innovation published by Kluwer Academic Publishers with Glenn Yago. Barth earned his Ph.D. in economics at Ohio State University.
