Summary:Some studies say that children do better in school, are more likely to stay in school, and tend to have a steady job when they get older if they attended preschool. Most of this research, however, has focused on poor children. This panel asked such questions as: Should the federal government, which now pays for such program as Head Start, invest more in preschool education, or is this an area best left to states, which have become much more active in financing programs for preschoolers? And how much investment is enough for early childhood education?
