Hernando de Soto

Hernando de Soto is President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy headquartered in Lima, Peru and one of Latin America's leading innovators and development economists. de Soto′s views of economic and social progress have never been more relevant. He envisions unlocking the invisible potential of assets to expand opportunities for prosperity, among them, the potential of the world′s poor to become entrepreneurs. de Soto has long waged a battle against terrorists′ hold over the poor. He and the ILD have been responsible for some 400 laws and regulations modernizing Peru's economic system, enabling the poor to gain legal title to their homes and businesses, thereby dissolving terrorist political power. de Soto authored The Other Path, a best-seller on economic development and The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else. de Soto did his post-graduate work at the Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva.
