Speaker's Biography:
Leon Panetta
Co-Director, The Panetta Institute, California State University, Monterey Bay; Former White House Chief of Staff
Leon Panetta is Co-Chair of California Forward, a bipartisan public interest effort committed to bolstering democracy and government performance in the state. The former White House chief of staff to President Clinton, he is also the founder and director of the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy, a not-for-profit center for the nonpartisan advancement of public policy based at California State University, Monterey Bay. Prior to his White House appointment, he was director of the Office of Management and Budget and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing California's 16th (now 17th) district. Panetta serves as distinguished scholar to the chancellor of the California State University system and is a member of the Independent Task Force on Immigration and America's Future. He also co-chairs the Joint Oceans Commission Initiative. He was appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger to co-chair the Council on Base Support and Retention and was a member of the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange. Panetta received a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Santa Clara University.
