John Breaux former U.S. Senator; Senior Counsel, Patton Boggs, LLP; Vice Chairman, President’s Federal Tax Reform Advisory Panel; Senior Managing Director, Clinton Group
John Breaux is a former Senator of the United States, Senior Counsel with Patton Boggs LLP, Vice Chairman of President Bush′s advisory panel on federal tax reform and Senior Managing Director of the Clinton Group. Breaux retired from the Senate in 2005 and now provides strategic advice to the firm′s attorneys and clients on public policy matters, with special concentration in health care and energy law. Breaux served 14 years in Congress before being elected to the Senate in 1986. He was a widely recognized bipartisan Senate leader, and in 1993, was elected Deputy Minority Whip, a position he held until his retirement. He also held a number of key Senate committee positions, among them, senior member of the Finance Committee, chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security and Family Policy, member of the Subcommittee on Health Care and the Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. Breaux played instrumental roles in forging the compromises that led to passage of the 1996 welfare and health insurance reform bills. He was also a leader in the efforts to reduce the capital gains tax and provide tax relief for college education expenses. As chairman of the Special Committee on Aging, Breaux focused on protecting and strengthening Social Security, Medicare, and other programs. In 1998, he was selected to chair the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, and co-chaired the National Commission on Retirement Policy, producing Social Security reform legislation. Breaux also founded the Centrist Coalition of Senate Democrats and Republicans, and served as chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council. Breaux earned his LLB at Louisiana State University School of Law.
