Kenneth Buetow Director, National Cancer Institute Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB)
Kenneth Buetow is Director of the National Cancer Institute Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB) and the Chief of the Laboratory of Population Genetics (LPG). The NCICB coordinates and deploys informatics in support of NCI research initiatives. Its goal is to maximize interoperability and integration of NCI research and its related information. The NCICB provides direct support to four NCI research programs: The Cancer Genome Anatomy Project, The Mouse Models of Human Cancer Consortium, The Director's Challenge: Towards a Molecular Classification of Cancer, and Clinical Trials. The LPG conducts human genetic and genomics research, both at the bench and using informatics tools. The laboratory also oversees the NCI's intramural high throughput genotyping and sequencing effort. Buetow is currently actively involved in the NCI′s Cancer Genome Anatomy Project and leads its Genetic Annotation Initiative, using these resources to identify genetic factors that alter cancer risk and understand how genes and environment interact to increase cancer risk. Previously, Buetow was at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Buetow earned his bachelor′s at Indiana University and his Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh.
