A message from Chairman Michael Milken and President and CEO Michael Klowden

The Global Conference is your opportunity to share ideas with a diverse group of senior public policy officials, institutional money managers, technology leaders, venture capitalists, leading academics, and senior executives from major corporations that have direct investments worldwide. You’ll also encounter some artists, philosophers and scientists who will add special perspectives. The rich mix of different viewpoints will help you to see the world in new ways.

At the Milken Institute, our scholars work throughout each year on a broad range of public policy issues, combining economic analysis with the study of social issues and future trends. Then, each spring, we bring experts from around the world to the Global Conference to give you both a global overview and an up-close, highly informed regional view. We look at hard data and create a frame of reference to help you place your activities in a global context. We won’t waste your time rehashing the obvious. Rather, every time you interact with the Institute, we want you to have a better understanding of the future, to recognize issues before the rest of the world sees them as issues. Where others see problems, we search out the opportunities that can help you be not only a better investor, but also to be a more informed, and effective, citizen of the world.

The Institute’s 2002 Global Conference, in conjunction with Forbes, has been carefully designed as a concentrated learning experience. Dozens of intensive, not-a-minute-wasted panels, plenary sessions and breakout meetings have been arranged in five tracks that allow you to create your own customized conference. With three or four breakout sessions running simultaneously on different themes, you can choose your areas of interest and move back and forth among the tracks.

The themes include Financial Capital, Business, Social Capital, Regions, and Human Capital. This year, we’re taking a serious look at Human Capital, the most valuable asset of any corporation. We’ll discuss the “Economics of Place” why certain cities and regions do a better job developing the skills of their citizens and creating jobs. Another panel explores the role of education (both traditional K-12 schools and lifelong learning opportunities) in expanding human capital. And this year, there will be special emphasis on medical research investments, cancer and heart disease, impending breakthroughs, ethical issues, nutrition and healthcare costs. This is an example of how the Global Conference can put you ahead of the curve on important issues. Several years ago, we discussed “The Fattening of America” and spelled out the costs $100 billion in economic effects and 300,000 annual excess deaths to businesses and society. In recent months, you’ve seen an explosion of press coverage about the obesity problem and proposed solutions. It’s just another example of how we spotlight the important issues early.

Past conferences have explored the state of Asian economies, biotechnology issues, the digitization of labor, wireless services and many other topics before they hit the headlines. Two years ago, within days of the NASDAQ’s peak during the dot.com frenzy, a Global Conference panelist predicted that few web companies would survive the next few years.

There have been real intellectual fireworks on past Global Conference panels and this year’s lineup of speakers will carry on the tradition. They’re an eclectic group who will help you to see the world with new understanding and to act with renewed confidence. And you’ll have an unparalleled opportunity to network with them.

Two plenary sessions this year will feature dialogues with Nobel laureates in Economic Science and in Medicine. These are always exciting events. Last year, nine Nobel winners participated on several panels.

We hope you’ll join us, along with the Nobel laureates, more than 100 thought-provoking panelists and more than 1,000 leaders of industry, finance, government, the academy and the media. It’s a unique setting in which decision-makers from around the world gather to share ideas, form new relationships and offer solutions to today’s most pressing global issues. Every attendee receives the Institute’s comprehensive 2002 Global Conference briefing book, which is packed with detailed charts and statistics.

We look forward to greeting you at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on April 22nd.

Sincerely,

Michael Milken, Chairman       Michael Klowden, President and CEO
