Joseph E. Aoun is the seventh president of Northeastern University. During his tenure, he globalized NU's signature co-op program, with students now working, studying, and researching in over 131 countries, on all seven continents. Aoun strategically aligned NU's research enterprise with three global imperatives: health, security, and sustainability. Aoun also led the establishment of an innovative network of regional campuses throughout North America. President Aoun received his Ph.D. in linguistics and philosophy from MIT and advanced degrees from the University of Paris (France) VIII and Saint Joseph University (Beirut). President Aoun has published seven books and written more than 40 articles. He was named a Knight of the Order of the Academic Palms by the French government, and received the Robert A. Muh Award from MIT. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a past chair of the American Council on Education.
