Vadim Backman is the Walter Dill Scott Professor of biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. He is also program leader, cancer and physical sciences, at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. Backman's research is focused on bringing advances in biophotonics into biomedical research and clinical medicine. He develops optics technologies for characterization and imaging of biological tissue with a focus on the nanoscale and molecular levels. His research spans from cancer biophysics to optical diagnostic and imaging techniques to multicenter clinical trials. Backman has received numerous awards, chaired various scientific conferences and was named as one of the top five funded National Institutes of Health investigators. He has published more than 193 papers in journals, including Nature and Physical Review Letters, and holds over 20 patents. Backman is the co-founder of two biotech companies.
