Franklin Orr is under secretary for science and energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, serving as principal advisor to the secretary and deputy secretary on clean-energy technology and science and energy research initiatives. He is the inaugural under secretary for the office, created to integrate basic science, applied research, technology development and deployment efforts. Orr oversees the DOE's offices of energy efficiency and renewable energy, fossil energy, and nuclear energy. Earlier, he was the Keleen and Carlton Beal Professor Emeritus in the department of energy resources engineering at Stanford University, where he was founding director of the Precourt Institute for Energy and the Global Climate and Energy Project, as well as dean of the school of Earth sciences. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Orr has worked for the Shell Development Co. Bellaire Research Center and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He holds a B.S. from Stanford and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, both in chemical engineering.
