Global Conference 2014
Mary-Patricia Hector is the national youth director for National Action Network, one of this country's largest civil rights organizations. At age 16, she has added Peace First Prize fellow to her list of accomplishments. She was awarded the fellowship for her national campaign Think Twice, which educates youth on gun violence and other issues that affect her generation. Think Twice provides teen-safety workshops for schools and trains teens and college students in youth advocacy techniques. Hector travels an average of 4,000 miles a month speaking at high schools, colleges, conferences, women's events and crisis shelters across the United States. Her keynote presentations call for teen activism: Her story provides the inspiration, and her how-to strategies give young people their own road map for changing the world. As one of 10 winners of the Peace First Prize, she received $50,000 to scale her project and is embarking on a two-year fellowship with Peace First to deepen her leadership.
