John Deasy is the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation's second-largest district. He leads thousands of teachers, administrators and staff in serving a population of more than 600,000 students so that all youth achieve. Since becoming superintendent in 2011, Deasy has focused on protecting students' rights to a high-quality education through policy, negotiation, legislation and the courts, while handling the budget crisis caused by the underfunding of California's classrooms. Before joining the district, he served as deputy director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In that role, Deasy led programmatic work on effective teaching. He has been a superintendent at districts in Maryland, California and Rhode Island. Deasy has been a Broad fellow, an Annenberg fellow, a superintendent of the year, a presenter at state and national conferences, and a consultant to districts undertaking high school reform and improvement strategies.
