John Nelson
Managing Director, Public Finance Group, Moody's Investors Service

John Nelson is managing director of the public finance group at Moody's Investors Service. Nelson oversees the work of 45 analysts covering nongovernmental tax-exempt organizations in health care, higher education, housing and other nonprofits. He is primarily responsible for ratings and research quality, credit policy coordination, multiyear business plans, and human resource development for the teams he oversees. Nelson is also an adjunct associate professor at New York University, where he teaches financial analysis of nonprofit organizations. Prior to joining Moody's in 1991, he managed an executive staff of corporate planners for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Nelson also spent four years as a country risk analyst for Republic National Bank, as well as two years as budget advisor to the New York City Council president. He received a B.A. in history with a concentration in economics from Binghamton University in New York and a master's in public policy from the University of Texas at Austin.
