N. D. Desai

Chairman, Apar Group of Industries

N.D. Desai is chairman of the Apar Group of Industries as well as a prominent industry leader, philanthropist and educator in India. He serves as chairman of the Apar Group, which has a yearly turnover of $550 million. He was the founder-chairman and 50 percent stakeholder in General Electric USA-Apar Lighting India Ltd. Desai has been an assistant professor at Drexel University, a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University and at various Indian universities. He is the president of Dharmsinh Desai University, India, and a trustee of Dharmsinh Desai Foundation, which runs free schools and provides scholarships to tribal children. He is the chairman and trustee of an orphanage in Mumbai and trustee of the charity Share Your Care, which serves free lunches to 750,000 qualified children. He has an degree in electrical engineering from the University of London, a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a degree in cost and business management studies from the Wharton School.
