Bill Gross is the founder and CEO of Idealab, a technology incubator headquartered in Pasadena, Calif. In the last 15 years, Idealab has created more than 100 technology companies, including eight IPOs and more than 35 acquisitions. Gross pioneered the invention of paid search, or "price-per-click" advertising when he founded Goto.com in 1998. The company was renamed Overture in 2000 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2003. Gross also created the first online city guide called CitySearch in 1995, and the digital photo management software Picasa, which was acquired by Google in 2004. He also created a number of clean-tech companies. Gross is currently CEO of UberMedia, a company focused on deepening relationship and building economic value with social media. He also serves on the boards of 10 companies in the areas of social media, robotics, automation, software and renewable energy. In addition, he serves as a trustee of his alma mater, the California Institute of Technology.
