Cathy Davidson

Ruth F. DeVarney Professor of English and John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Duke University


Cathy Davidson is the John Hope Franklin Professor at Duke University, where she served from 1998 to 2006 as vice provost for interdisciplinary studies, designing innovative programs across the university. She is co-founder of HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Advanced Collaboratory, or "haystack"), which pioneers new forms of learning. Davidson co-directs the $2 million annual HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competition. In 2010, President Obama nominated her for the National Council on the Humanities. Davidson has published more than 20 books, including "Closing: The Life and Death of an American Factory" (with photographer Bill Bamberger) and "The Future of Thinking" (with David Theo Goldberg). Her forthcoming book is "Now You See It: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work and Learn" (Viking Press). She blogs at www.hastac.org and www.nowyouseeit.net.
