Director, Metropolitan Opportunity Unit, Ford Foundation
George McCarthy is Director of the Urban Opportunity Unit at the Ford Foundation. This initiative seeks to provide low-income people with better access to jobs and opportunities by supporting regional planning efforts, transportation investments and housing development that alleviates poverty within metropolitan areas. McCarthy previously administered a program focused on using homeownership to build assets for low-income families and their communities. Before joining Ford, he was a senior research associate at the Center for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an assistant professor of economics at Bard College, resident scholar at the Jerome Levy Economics Institute, visiting scholar at King's College of Cambridge University and at the University of Naples, and research associate at the Centre for Social Research in St. Petersburg, Russia. McCarthy received a bachelor′s degree from the University of Montana, a master′s degree from Duke University and a Ph.D. in economics from UNC—Chapel Hill.
