Bernard Alpert is Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. As a volunteer surgeon for International Medical Corps, he was the first non-military U.S. physician to enter Iraq as part of the humanitarian effort launched in April 2003. He returned to Iraq five times in an educational enterprise aimed at reintegrating all Iraqi physicians with their world colleagues. In 2001, as president of the Medical Board of California, Alpert was an architect of the "California Physician Corps," a program that encourages physicians to practice in low-income communities by offering medical school loan relief. Alpert received a bachelor's degree from Amherst College and trained in general and plastic surgery at UC San Francisco.
