Chief Representative in North America, Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA)
Joel Velasco is Chief Representative in North America of Brazil's Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA). Based in Washington, D.C., Velasco oversees UNICA's efforts to expand the North American sugar and bioenergy markets, with a particular focus on low-carbon, advanced biofuels. Previously, he was managing director of Stonebridge International, an advisory firm. Prior to that, he served as senior advisor to the U.S. ambassador to Brazil. From 1994 to 1997, Velasco was a personal aide for Vice President Al Gore. A dual national of Brazil and the United States, he worked on a broad spectrum of issues, including trade and regional security. Educated in both Brazilian and American schools, Velasco received a master's degree at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and earned a bachelor's degree from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
