Anthony Atala is Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the W.H. Boyce Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at Wake Forest University. A practicing surgeon and a researcher in regenerative medicine, he has applied for or received more than 200 national and international patents. Atala has served on several national committees, including the National Institutes of Health Bioengineering Consortium. He is the editor of nine books and several journals and has published more than 300 journal articles. Atala is a recipient of the Christopher Columbus Foundation Award, bestowed on an American working on a discovery that will significantly affect society, and the Gold Cystoscope Award. He was named to Esquire's list of the "75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century" in 2008, and Fast Company's list of the "100 Most Creative People in Business" for 2009.
