William Frey is a senior fellow at the Milken Institute, visiting fellow at the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program and research professor on the faculty of the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan. He is an internationally regarded demographer in the field of migration, population redistribution, and the demography of metropolitan areas and an expert on the U.S. Census.

Frey has held positions at the Center for Social and Demographic Analysis at State University of New York at Albany, the Center for Demography and Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology at the University of Washington-Seattle. The recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, Frey was a visiting research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria) in 1980-81, the Andrew W. Mellon Research Scholar at the Population Reference Bureau in 1988, and the Hewlett Visiting Scholar at Child Trends (Washington, D.C.) in 1995.

He served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the 1995 President's National Urban Policy Report and for the State of Cities 2000 Report.

Frey has authored well over 100 journal articles and books. He has served as a guest commentator on NPR, C-Span, ABC News, CNN, Fox News Channel and others. Results from his work have been written about in The National Review, The New Republic and The New York Times Magazine. Frey is also a contributing editor to American Demographics magazine.

Frey received his Ph.D. in sociology from Brown University.
