Colin Woodard

Colin Woodard is the director of Nationhood Lab at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University. He is the author of six books including American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America and Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhood. His work inspired a prime time NBC drama and an Ubisoft video game and has been featured by CNN, the BBC World Service, MSNBC, PBS News Hour, NPR, The Economist, New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian and the Asahi Shimbun. A longtime foreign correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor and San Francisco Chronicle, he covered the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, ethnic conflict in the Balkans, and climate change in the Antarctic. He won a 2012 George Polk Award and in 2016 was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize for his investigative reporting at the Portland Press Herald. A graduate of Tufts University and the University of Chicago he is past Pew Fellow in International Journalism at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and a recipient of the Jane Bagley Lehman Award for Excellence in Public Advocacy.
